A young Kurd is participating in the organization of the United Nations for internet governance.

A young Kurd is participating in the (United Nations Internet Governance Forum), which is taking place in Japan under the auspices of UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

On October 7, 2023, the United Nations Internet Governance Forum was inaugurated in Kyoto, Japan, with António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, presiding over the event. Ramazan Ismail, a young man from Erbil, has been invited as the sole representative of Iraq by the United Nations.

Speaking from Kyoto, Ramazan Ismail stated, “I was officially invited to the forum by the United Nations, and I represent Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.”

He further mentioned, “The forum is being organized directly under the leadership of António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, and is supervised by Fumio Kishida, the Prime Minister of Japan, with the participation of numerous heads of state, leaders, and activists from around the world.”

Ramazan emphasized, “On behalf of Iraq and Kurdistan, I am the only participant; besides me, there are youth, heads, ministers, and representatives of European Union member states attending the forum.”

Ramazan Ismail, originally from Erbil, was recognized with a UN Youth Peace Prize in 2019.

The 18th United Nations Internet Governance Forum is being held in Kyoto, Japan, and will continue until December 12.

The Internet Governance Forum is a platform for discussing internet governance policies and issues. Government representatives, activists, IT professionals, and internet experts participate in these discussions.

The Internet Governance Forum was officially established in 2006 by the UN Secretary-General, and the first meeting took place in November 2006. Since then, the forum has been held annually.
